Mayor Dan Gordon on behalf of Waimakariri District Council, wishes to congratulate King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their Coronation.
A tree planting day was held in the Waimakariri District last year to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, and the ascension to the throne of King Charles III.
Mayor Dan planted English Oak trees at Victoria Park in Rangiora, Kaiapoi Domain, Woodend Recreation Reserve and Pearson Park in Oxford in October last year along with the Chairs of the Community Boards in each location.
“The King is a very passionate advocate of the environment, so we felt planting trees was a very fitting way to honour his ascension to the throne.
“It also provides a place where future generations of our District can come to pay their respects and acknowledge this important time in our history.”
Mayor Dan will attend a local street party to mark the coronation being held on the corner of King and Charles Streets in Rangiora from 11am today and he will also attend the Civic Service with other dignitaries to be held at the Transitional Cathedral in Christchurch on Sunday.
“I am delighted to be able to attend these events and mark what is a significant milestone in our history.
“I had the privilege of meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla when they visited Tuahiwi Marae in 2019. I enjoyed our conversation and found them to be very down to earth and interested to know more about the Waimakariri District.”
“I wish King Charles and Queen Camilla all the very best as they officially embark on their reign.”
