Celebrate Our Environmental Champions: Waimakariri District Environmental Awards

Calling all eco-warriors, nature enthusiasts, and sustainability champions!

The Waimakariri District Council is thrilled to announce the launch of our Environmental Awards, and we need your help to shine a spotlight on the incredible individuals and groups who are making a difference in our community. Whether you're a passionate individual, a dynamic youth group, or a dedicated organisation, we want to hear your stories and celebrate your achievements!

Why We Need You

Our district is brimming with inspiring people, organisations, and projects that often go unnoticed. These unsung heroes are tirelessly working to protect our environment, enhance biodiversity, and restore our precious waterways. It's time to give them the recognition they deserve.

Award Categories

We are seeking applications and nominations in the following categories:

  • Youth (18 or under) – This could be an individual or a youth group.
  • Individual – For those solo champions making a big impact.
  • Group/Organisation – This includes commercial companies, volunteer groups, and NGOs, whether formal or informal.

Are You Our Next Environmental Hero?

Have you been involved in an environmental restoration project?

Are you winning the battle against weeds and pests to protect our indigenous biodiversity?

Is your company’s native roadside berm looking awesome?

Has your project or research helped identify ways to enhance indigenous biodiversity and improve our natural environment?

Do you know someone who is working hard to ensure their work is sustainable?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, we want to hear from you!

What We're Looking For

We want to see how you, your group, or your project are enhancing our local natural environment and striving for sustainability. We're looking for applications that demonstrate one or more of the following criteria:

  • Advancing knowledge in ecological fields.
  • Increasing indigenous biodiversity.
  • Working towards climate sustainability.
  • Enhancing environmental connection.
  • Improving mahinga kai/food security.

How to Apply

Don't forget to include:

  • Your connection to the Waimakariri District.
  • The successes or learning experiences you've had along the way.
  • How you have championed or inspired environmental protection, conservation, or restoration.
  • Full details of your project or activities, including photos or other evidence where necessary and available.

Applications can be submitted online, emailed with the application form to biodiversity@wmk.govt.nz, or delivered to any Waimakariri District Council libraries or service centres.

Important Dates

Applications open: Monday 5 May

Applications close: 5pm, Friday 28 June

The Panel's decisions are final and binding. Awards will be presented at the Community Service Awards.
