Heavy Rain & Strong Wind Watch

MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Watch and Strong Wind Watch for Canterbury.

8am - 19 March

Metservice have extended the Heavy Rain Watch and Strong Wind Watch for the Canterbury region north of the Raikaia River from 8pm Tuesday to 6am Wednesday.  There remains a moderate chance that this will be upgraded to from a Watch to a Warning.


10.30am -18 March

WIND
The Strong Wind Watch goes for 16hrs from 2pm Tue, 18 Mar - 6am Wed, 19 March and covers the Eastern parts of Canterbury from the Rangitata River northwards and the Kaikoura Coast

Expect southerly to southwesterly winds which may approach severe gale in exposed places. Note, winds are expected to ease from the south this evening. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

RAIN

The Heavy Rain Water goes for  13hrs from 1pm Tue, 18 Mar - 2am Wed, 19 Mar and covers Canterbury from the Rangitata River northwards.

Expect periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

Council staff have today been checking storm water infrastructure and have sucker pumps booked in case there is a need to respond to any issues.

We will continue to monitor the event, but currently it is looking like about 50mm of rainfall over 6-12 hours.


11am - 17 March

MetService has issued  a Strong Wind Watch for Canterbury for 11hrs from 9am - 8pm Mon, 17 Mar.

WIND

The warning covers the Canterbury Plains and we're expecting northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

There is a moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

Winds are expected to ease from the south during Tuesday morning.

RAIN

Tomorrow we are expecting a southerly change that will bring rain from late morning all the way through until Wednesday.

Indications are that we should expect to see a period of reasonably heavy rain in the early afternoon of about 5mm per hour. This may change further as the forecast develops.
