Demolition of the former Rangiora Police Station at 309 High Street has been scheduled to begin on 6 January 2025.
The building, which sits beside and behind the Rangiora Town Hall, has been empty since 2019.
Project Engineer, Dominic Mansbridge says this work will allow the Waimakariri District Council to progress with the construction of a new public car park.
“The site will provide for more parking spaces in the short term, especially for patrons of the Rangiora Town Hall and for the businesses along High Street.”
Construction of a new public car park will follow on upon completion of the demolition work.
Scope Group has been awarded the contract to demolish the building, which is expected to be completed in March 2025.
Council and Scope Group have been investigating options for reutilising the materials that can be salvaged from the site.
“We’re aiming to recover and repurpose approximately 90% of the materials in the building in an effort to divert it from going to landfill,” says Dominic.
During demolition, Scope Group will thoroughly segregate building materials, directing concrete, brick, and scrap metal to designated recycling facilities. The car park basecourse will be constructed from recycled concrete, effectively extending the material's lifecycle and reducing environmental impact.
No road closures or interruptions to services are expected but people should expect to see trucks coming and going from site.
The public is advised to stay out of the demolition site.
