Tradie Breakfast to Support Mental Health

Lance Burdett is returning to Waimakariri this month to talk to local tradespeople about ways they can boost their personal resilience, on and off the building site.

The former crisis negotiator will be speaking at the Saracens Rugby Club, Southbrook Park on Thursday 25 July for the annual Tradie Breakfast. A free BBQ breakfast will be put on from 6.15am, followed by Lance’s presentation from 7am.

Once described as the most qualified and highly skilled negotiator within NZ Police, the mental wellness coach also spent 20 years working in construction.

“He understands the industry and its ups and downs,” says Council Community Development Facilitator, Nicola Trolove.

“The trade sector is a competitive market and subject to influences outside their control, aside from the weather, staffing, skilled labour shortages, supply of goods, the ups and downs in the housing market and the economy. So, tradies need to be resilient and look after themselves and their mates, know when they are struggling and what they can do to help themselves and their mates.”

The annual event started four years ago after a group of builders approached the Council wanting to do something positive to support the mental health of their fellow tradespeople. Up to 300 people have attended past events, thanks to the support of Waghorn Builders.

Nicola said this will be Lance’s third tradie breakfast.

“Each time, his messages have been well received. The tradies have joined in his practical exercises and seen that they are not alone in their experience of life’s challenges. They appreciate Lance’s genuine approach, his willingness to share his own experiences and what that has taught him.”

This year’s event is supported by Mike Greer Homes, Rangiora ITM, Millbrook Kitchens, Plumbing World, PAK’nSAVE Rangiora and Mates in Construction.

The sponsors have also donated spot prizes such as tools, clothing, barbecue sets, picnic blankets, drink bottles, prezzie cards and more. Plus, everyone who turns up will go in the draw to win one of two Paslode FrameMaster nail guns worth $1000 each.
