Making Waimakariri More Welcoming

Have your say to help us make Waimakariri a place that everyone is proud to call home.

We’re seeking your help to understand what it’s like for newcomers to settle into our community.  This information will help contribute to the Welcoming Communities Plan for Waimakariri.

The Welcoming Communities programme, led by Immigration New Zealand, supports newcomers to feel included and have a sense of belonging in the economic, civic, cultural and social life of their new community. The Council has received three years of funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to implement this programme.

Waimakariri is a very fast-growing community with 1,600 new people moving here every year from outside the District, across New Zealand and overseas.

“We want everyone to feel welcome here and create a diverse and vibrant community,” says Welcoming Communities Coordinator Aimee Claassens.

“Ensuring everyone feels included and has a sense of belonging is vital for building a strong and resilient community that enjoys better social outcomes and stronger economic growth.”

The plan will be a roadmap of key initiatives, and will highlight the good work the community is already doing.
