Entries are open for Waimakariri’s Dog of the District

With annual dog registration upon us, there’s no better time to announce the fiercest competition for canines north of the Waimakariri Bridge.

Introducing… Waimakariri’s Dog of the District!

Calling all Waimakariri dogs of any colour, speed, and stature. This is your time to show us what you’ve got. So, put on your favourite collar, fetch your smelliest toy, and practise your best “sit” for the camera.

How to enter

Head to the relevant post on our Facebook page and share a photo of your furry friend. Explain what makes them worthy of the coveted title – it could be their affectionate personality or maybe their clever tricks that sets them apart from the pack!

Entries close on Sunday 9 June at 11.59pm.

We’ll select four finalists based on their looks and charm, then it’s up to the public to cast their votes. The dog with the most votes will win free dog registration for a year, a 10kg bag of Black Hawk dog food, a certificate of achievement and, of course, bragging rights!

Entries are open to any dog registered with Waimakariri District Council.

Dog registration reminder

It is important to register your dog every year as part of being a responsible dog owner.

If your dog has been previously registered with Waimakariri District Council, you should receive a renewal notice by mid-June. When you receive your renewal form you can:

  • Pay online
  • Send the registration form and payment to Waimakariri District Council, Private Bag 1005, Rangiora 7440
  • Pay by internet banking
  • Visit a service centre at Rangiora, Oxford or Kaiapoi.

Beat the rush and pay for your dog registration by the end of July, before the fee increases.

New multi-year tags

If you registered your dog with Waimakariri District Council in 2023, you will have one of our new multi-year metal dog tags. These replaced the plastic disc or strip that was changed annually.

Provided the tag is in good condition, you won’t need to replace it this year. Just pay the registration fees by your preferred method and you’re good to go.

More information about dog registration and multi-year tags is available at waimakariri.govt.nz/dogs
