Celebrating Youth Week

From next Monday 20 May, the Waimakariri District will be celebrating our rangatahi – our young people as part of a nationwide festival of events for Youth Week.

Waimakariri District council Youth Development Facilitator, Emily Belton says Youth Week is a great opportunity to acknowledge the valuable contributions that young people make to our District.

“This week is about celebrating our young people, their diverse range of talents and interests and providing opportunities for them to try something new, meet new people and challenge themselves.

“It’s also a great way to showcase some of the activities and services on offer for young people in our district.”

Emily says in the Waimakariri District we identify youth as being aged 12-24 and the activities on offer for Youth Week are designed to offer something that might interest youth of all ages.

“We have some great activities lined up including pizza and boardgames at the libraries, we have learner licence drop-in sessions, we have Skate Jam sessions, inflatables at Dudley Aquatics, planting days for our environmentally conscious young people and so much more.”

The theme of Youth Week 2024 is:

‘Māwherangi a tama roto ka taka, kāpuia ake ka pūrangiaho’

‘We may not have it all together, but together we have it all’

Emily says this is a very fitting theme for young people in Waimakariri.

“We are a really collaborative and connected district and we want to make sure that our young people feel valued and a real sense of belonging.

“It’s a reminder that not everything is perfect and everyone goes through ups and downs but our strength is in coming together and supporting one another on the journey.

“I hope all of our young people and their families make the most of the activities on offer and have fun!”
