We are pleased to announce that a new deck for the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge has been ordered and materials are due for delivery in late March 2024.
The new deck replacement forms part of the long-term upgrade of the bridge, that is jointly owned by the Waimakariri and Selwyn District Councils.
Over recent years, short-term maintenance has been required to effectively maintain the bridge in a usable condition for all vehicles, until design work could be completed, and funding secured for the replacement of the deck and adjoining barrier systems.
Selwyn District Council is responsible for the day-to-day management of maintenance on the bridge, and any renewals works required, with the cost of repairs being shared between both Councils. NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi), also contribute funding for maintenance and renewals on the bridge.
Collaboratively, both Councils have worked together to assess the existing structure, determine the construction requirements for the replacement project, and successfully secure the necessary funding.
Funding for the project was secured for the 2023/24 financial year. The project design was successfully finalised in late 2023, and the contractor tendering process started before Christmas. The deadline for tender submissions is late January, which will be followed by a tender evaluation process prior to an award of contract in February.
The construction of the new bridge deck is scheduled to take place in April. To allow construction to take place safely and efficiently, with minimal disruption to the public, the works will be delivered under a full road closure throughout the night between the hours of 7.30pm and 4.30am.
A full programme of works including details of traffic management and timings will be shared closer to the time to allow motorists to look at alternative travel routes while the work is being delivered.
Both Councils understand the frustrations of the community regarding the current condition of the bridge, and we appreciate your continued patience. We are pleased to have a targeted delivery date for the replacement of the bridge deck and will continue to keep you updated on its progress.
