A heavy rain watch remains in place for North Canterbury until 1am Thursday morning despite Cyclone Gabrielle keeping forecasters on their toes overnight with a few changes in direction. However, the expected rain levels have dropped significantly.
In Waimakariri we have onle seen an average of 3 to 4mm of rain at most of our rain gauge sites. Summerhill is bucking the trend with 16mm - most of it arriving around 5am this morning.
We expect the wind to continue throughout the day with the weather getting only slightly worse around 5pm. The wet weather should have cleared by 9am tomorrow morning.
Across the District the road and stormwater networks have been performing as expected and there have been no significant issues. Our staff remain on shift overnight to undertake any emergency repairs if required.
In Waimakariri we expect the main impact of Cyclone Gabrielle to be felt from midday today until early Thursday morning. We expect there to be potentially 80mm of rain during this period.
The MetService have advised they have moderate confidence there will be heavy rain during this period.
Earlier today the Government declared a national state of emergency following the sever impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle on the North Island. This declaration will enable the Government to support the affected regions, provide additional resources , and help set the priorities across the country for the response.
The declaration applies to the six regions that have already declared a local State of Emergency: Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Hawkes Bay.
For Waimakariri we are not covered by this declaration. However, we still urge residents to take the Weather Warnings seriously.
