Community Board on a Fence Decorating Mission

Wednesday, 12 September 2012

It’s an outdoor art gallery with a difference.  Last Wednesday Rangiora Community Board members were up early in the morning decorating the High Street fences with a series of community art works.

As part of an overall campaign to counteract the visual effect of the protective safety fences which have adorned High Street, the Community Board invited groups and individuals in the community to decorate a number of various silhouette shapes which they have now attached to the fences.

School groups, community groups and budding artists responded strongly to the invitation – with the Community Board members attaching over 100 different contributions.  Given the length of fencing available there is still space for more contributions – those people who would like to enter into the spirit of decorating  High Street can contact Community Board member Judith Hoult at bjhoult@clear.net.nz or phone (03) 313 7558 to find out how.

“The response has been great so far”, says Judith Hoult, “both from the number of contributions we’ve had,  and also from the feedback I’ve heard from people walking down High Street and from local retailers.  The colourful creations are putting a smile on people’s faces”.

There are no immediate plans to take down the artwork but it is hoped they will be refreshed from time to time over the summer with new contributions that the Community Board receives.
